Information for Foreign Patients

A foreign patient is someone not registered as a resident in Norway in the National Population Register. This includes tourists, employees from abroad staying in Norway for a short period and Norwegian citizens living abroad.

Payment rules

Such patients usually pay for treatment themselves, but may get partial coverage if they have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or other official documents under international agreements.
 
What you pay depends on your country of origin and the documents you can show

Documents you must show

  1. Address -  We have prepared our own form that must be completed  
    • Permanent home address abroad
    • Temporary address in Norway (if available)

  1. Identification

    • Passport or other valid ID
  2. Coverage documents

    • Nordic patients – Home address + valid ID

    • EU/EEA, Switzerland, United Kingdom – EHIC card required.

    • No EHIC → you pay the full cost.

    • If admitted without EHIC → show insurance papers and contact your insurance company. They must contact the hospital at fellespostboks.utland@stolav.no (to avoid the bill being sent directly to you).

    • Australia – Medicare Australia card or passport required.

    • No card/passport → you pay the full cost.

    • If admitted without these → show insurance papers and contact your insurance company. They must contact the hospital at fellespostboks.utland@stolav.no.

    • Other countries – Patients pay the full cost.

    • If admitted → show insurance papers and contact your insurance company. They must contact the hospital at fellespostboks.utland@stolav.no.
