How to construct a HHC project

When constructing a HHC project it is important to acknowledge the healthcare context and include relevant metrics from each HHC pillar.

Remember that

  • Testing and evaluating solutions must align with the heavily pressured and complex environment in healthcare. The clinical department’s ability to allocate resources to a project can be limited and plan stakeholder involvement accordingly.
  • Healthcare constitute of fine knitted organizations constantly changing where small or large adjustments of practice in can affect the whole system. Evaluating the process of implementation of any solution is important.
  • Involving interdisciplinary knowledge is important from the very start. Even when outcomes on one or two pillars do not seem apparent at first. HHC integrates assessments of relevant parameters across the three pillars of the HHC model—organisational practices, employee well-being, and quality of care—into managing processes, practices, and projects.
  • The HHC approach incorporates continuous organisational learning throughout the process through the development, testing and evaluation of each intervention to ensure converting knowledge into practice.

The staging of the HHC project or project is based on an identification of a change potential (i.e. something that can be improved) in one of the HHC pillars. It often stem from everyday work in the clinic or unit, or directly from a managerial decision. The HHC project is followed by a structured seven-step approach:

  1. Analyzing the rationale for change
  2. Pinpointing the scope
  3. Constructing the intervention including metrics on each HHC pillar and the change process.
  4. Deployment and evolution of the intervention
  5. Evaluating the results, learning and verifying to ensure HHC balance
  6. Managerial decision that aims for a sustainable system based on impacts of alternatives that best meet the objectives of the proposed solution measured by the performance metrics of Healthy HealthCare.

Converting the HHC model into HHC approach in individual projects ensures the consideration of all three pillars in participatory interventions that fit the individual contexts and build on the complex organization of services, opportunities, and constraints in healthcare.

The HHC approach framework enables scholars, healthcare practitioners and managers to navigate complex healthcare landscapes while remaining focused on achieving a healthy healthcare system.
